Here at Naturally Yours Events, we work with so many amazing vendors that contribute to our clients’ ideal wedding day. This week, we would like to put the spotlight on FIG Catering – a husband and wife duo that provides mouth-watering, sustainable delicacies for various special events. Learn more about them by reading the Q&A between NYE and Molly Schemper of FIG Catering below.089LLreceptionPhoto by Greenhouse Loft Photography.

NYE: Tell us about your business- what do you specialize in?

FIG: We are a small event catering company – focusing on events from 2-150 guests. We provide high-quality, seasonal, custom menus and personal service for corporate and social events, including weddings.

NYE: How did you get started? What inspired you?

FIG: My husband and I started the company in 2005. We were inspired by the great, farm-focused restaurants that were opening up in Chicago and noticed that catered food for the most part was remaining uninspired.

NYE: How would you describe your business’ style?

FIG: We are laid-back and hence tend to attract laid-back couples. We employ low-pressure sales and do not try to convince clients to get things they don’t need or want.030LLreceptionPhoto by Greenhouse Loft Photography.

NYE: How far in advance should clients book your services?

FIG: Wedding clients generally book us 6-10 months in advance, but we’ve booked with as short as 1 month notice (if we have availability).

NYE: Where does your inspiration come from?

FIG:  We prefer to avoid wedding blogs and publications as we feel the ideas are often recycled or too “wedding-y.” Pinterest, while great for some things, also presents many impossible, improbable, and ridiculous scenarios. We prefer looking around us for inspiration – from local restaurants and community farms to street artwork and other small businesses.

NYE: What is one piece of advice you think all couples would benefit from knowing?

FIG: You can do your wedding your way. Even though there are lots of people coming to your wedding and you should consider them, ultimately it’s your day and you should do what you like.

NYE: Do you have any green initiatives you’d like to share?

FIG: In addition to sourcing local and organic foods, we recycle and compost to produce as little trash as possible. We have implemented energy and water reduction initiatives in our kitchen including timed lighting and heating, low-flow faucets, and energy efficient appliances. By encouraging clients to use other green vendors we hope to make their entire wedding more eco-friendly, not just the catering.

NYE: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

FIG: Eating, drinking, traveling, and hanging out with our cat and new puppy.
